Q: What is Chiropractic?

A: Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts based upon the understanding that motion is key to health. As Chiropractors, we work to find areas of the spine and other joints where the joint motion is restricted. Treatment of those restrictions restores function and flexibility to the joints, thereby reducing pain and spasm. "Chiropractic" comes from the Greek word Chiropraktikos, meaning "effective treatment by hand." Chiropractic stresses the idea that the cause of many disease processes begins with the body's inability to adapt to its environment. It looks to address these diseases not by the use of drugs and chemicals, but by locating and adjusting a musculoskeletal area of the body, which is functioning improperly.

Q: What conditions benefit from Chiropractic care?

A: Although Chiropractic is used most frequently to relieve low back pain, studies have found it to be effective for a variety of conditions, such as migraine headaches, neck and shoulder pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, and even infantile colic.

Q: Does Chiropractic hurt?

A: Under normal circumstances, adjustments don't hurt. The patient may experience a minor amount of discomfort during the adjustment, which lasts only seconds.

Q: Is Chiropractic safe?

A: Chiropractic adjustments or manipulations are extremely safe. In fact, Chiropractic malpractice insurance is less than any other physician type.

Q: What kind of training do Chiropractors have?

A: Chiropractors receive an education that emphasizes neuromuscular diagnosis and treatment. Preparation for the practice of Chiropractic is concentrated on three areas of learning; basic training in the biological and health sciences (anatomy, physiology, histology, biochemistry, clinical and radiological diagnosis); specialized training in the Chiropractic discipline (theoretical studies, practice, diagnosis and applications); and extensive clinical training.

Q: Are there studies that support Chiropractic?

A: Several studies have documented the effectiveness of Chiropractic in relieving back pain, neck pain, etc. More recent studies have shown Chiropractic to be effective in treating infantile colic and migraine headaches.

Q: How often will I have to come?

A: Every patient is different and therefore every treatment plan is unique. Rarely is anyone recommended to come more than three times in one week. Furthermore, no treatment plan is written in stone and as you get better the frequency of treatments decrease. So, if you get better in one visit, then fantastic!

Q: Once I see a Chiropractor, do I have to go forever?

A: Absolutely not! It is our goal to help you get better as fast as possible. Often times, it may take several visits to make significant change, but if it takes only one that one is all you will be recommended.

Q: Will I have to have X-Rays?

A: We do not take X-Rays at Monroe Chiropractic Center, but if you have them, then please bring them.  After your initial exam the doctor will make the determination as to whether or not X-Rays are warranted. In most cases, they are not. If you are referred for X-Rays, we can recommend several radiology clinics within blocks where you can have the films taken.

Q: What does the first visit/initial examination entail?

A: Please see the What to Expect on Your First Visit page.

Q: Do you work with medical doctors?

A: Yes.  Many area M.D.'s refer to Monroe  Chiropractic Center, because they know us and our reputation for getting results. Furthermore, we stay in constant communication with all of your healthcare providers and work well in an interdisciplinary plan.

Q: Does my insurance cover Chiropractic?
A: Please see the Insurance and Payment section.
